    Very useful multimeter

Posted by Carl on 1st Dec 2021

Meter is really convenient. I like the backlight. I wisht th backlight were not automatic; I would like to be able to turn it on by myself. I was not sure I would like the safety feature of covers that prevent you from plugging in the leads incorrectly. I am still not sure I like it, because it means you often have to remove the leads before changing ranges or turning off the meter. But it does prevent a mistake from damaging the meter. I like the included case; it lets me store everything neatly. All in all, I am glad a bought it.

Is there something this meter doesn’t do?

Posted by Jacob on 24th Aug 2020

When I looked at this meter when I requested it, I saw all the knob positions and was thinking that it required a lot of manual range changes. But the knob positions aren’t for range changes they are for function changes. There are so many functions on this meter and for this price, it is quite amazing. The display is large and easy to read. One thing that puzzled me when I took it out of the case was that some of the input jack positions were closed off and covered with yellow plastric. It turn out that when you change functions, it covers the inputs you are not using, so you can’t plug into jack inputs that are for some other measurement. The instructions mention an AC/DC current clamp as an optional feature. This one did not have that included, but it sounds like something useful. There is a powerful magnet on the back that would allow this meter to be held in place against a metal cabinet. The included thermal probe works. This is not a bad choice for a general purpose everything meter.

Very good meter at a very good price

This meter comes well packaged in a handy little case. I'm a big fan of cases for equipment with pieces so that's a big plus right there. Construction of this multi-meter is definitely a couple steps above the base models you find on Amazon. The case is a bit larger as well (although not as large as the product picture with all the colored wires would have you think) which accommodates multiple functions you won't find on base models including larger screen, temperature probe, non-contact voltage detection, and the flip out stand on the back. It also has a feature I love that I've only seen on 1 other, much more expensive, meter: The probe connectors are covered by yellow plastic covers that slide open/closed based on the dial option you choose. In other words, its essentially impossible to get the probes in the wrong place for the wrong activity! Nifty. Surprisingly, I found the NCV test more useful than I expected. Its not something I have on my other meters, but I found myself using it at random times. Everything I tested with this meter worked and it seems well-built so I feel confident giving it a 'Recommended' rating. The only downsides are 1) the battery compartment screws go into soft plastic and i expect they'd strip easily if someone is in a hurry. 2) A lack of instructions. All you get is one small sheet printed front and back that is basically a feature reference. Even the cheapo meters I buy for my kids come with a small booklet explaining operation.
